Why I Chose a B.S. in Construction Management

Going back to school as an adult isn’t an easy decision, especially when you're running a business and already working in your field. But for me, it’s a step that feels not only necessary—but strategic.
For years, I’ve worked in architectural drafting, gaining real-world experience, building a business, and working closely with contractors and clients. I love what I do, and I’ve built a strong foundation—but I’ve always had a deeper goal in mind: becoming a licensed architect.
The Educational Roadblock
In Arkansas, where I live and work, the educational requirement to become a licensed architect is a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree. Naturally, I began looking into online B.Arch programs to see if I could make that leap.
The problem? Cost. Most online B.Arch programs were far more expensive than I could afford—especially as someone who wanted to lean heavily on grants and federal loans. And unfortunately, financial aid options are more limited for many of the architecture-specific programs out there. That meant I had to think outside the box.
Finding a Smarter Path
While researching, I came across something that changed my direction: some accredited Master of Architecture (M.Arch) programs will accept students who hold a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field. That opened a new path for me—one that was not only more affordable, but actually better aligned with my long-term goals.
If I could earn a bachelor’s degree in something else, then move on to an M.Arch program, I could still meet the educational requirements for licensure. The best part? It allowed me to be more intentional with the type of degree I pursued in the meantime.
Why Construction Management?
At first, I considered getting a degree in general business—something to help me better understand how to run and grow my firm. I’ve been in leadership roles in the past and learned a lot on the job, but I’ve never had formal business or management education. Much of what I know has come from hands-on experience and trial by fire. A business degree would certainly help me sharpen those skills.
But then I found an online B.S. program in Construction Management, and it immediately felt like the right fit.
Construction Management offers the business and leadership skills I was looking for—but through the lens of the construction and design industry. It’s tailored to professionals like myself, who are already working in the field and want to better understand how projects are built from start to finish.
I'll be learning about budgeting, scheduling, estimating, contracts, project management, safety, and communication—skills that will make me not just a better drafter, but a more informed business owner and eventual architect.
Looking Ahead
This isn’t just a detour. It’s a bridge.
The B.S. in Construction Management will equip me to better serve my clients today—while preparing me for the M.Arch program that will bring me closer to licensure tomorrow.
My dream of becoming a licensed architect is still very much alive. I’m just taking the route that makes the most sense for me, financially and professionally. And in the meantime, I’ll be gaining valuable skills that benefit my firm, my clients, and the way I approach each project.
Thanks for following along on this journey. Whether you're a fellow designer, a client, or just someone curious about the path to licensure—I'm glad you're here.
